Groovy Décor Returns: Embracing the 1970s Revival in Your Home

For autumn/winter 2023, homes are to become more confident and joyful, with strong retro references, and a playful and youthful colour palettes. As we close the year, the 70s revival will only become more prevalent as we tap into the fun and optimism of the era!

The 1970s were characterised by their distinct design elements and a penchant for boldness. It was an era that celebrated self-expression, and this was reflected in the home décor. As we revisit this period, you'll discover how to infuse your home with the essence of the '70s while maintaining a fresh and contemporary feel.

70s revival for your home

1. Earthy Tones and Warm Hues

The color palette of the '70s was all about earthy tones and warm, inviting hues. Think mustard yellows, avocado greens, burnt oranges, and deep browns. To embrace this revival, consider using these colors as accents in your home. Opt for throw pillows, area rugs, or even a statement wall to infuse that '70s warmth into your space.

2. Funky Patterns and Textures

The '70s were all about bold patterns and textures. Incorporate geometric designs, paisley prints, and psychedelic motifs into your décor. Look for wallpaper, upholstery, or even curtains that feature these patterns. Don't be afraid to mix and match; it's all part of the eclectic charm of the era.

3. Shag Carpets and Retro Flooring

One iconic element of the '70s was the shag carpet. While wall-to-wall shag might be a bit much for modern tastes, consider adding a shag area rug to your living room or bedroom. It provides both comfort and a touch of retro flair. For a more subtle nod to the era, opt for terrazzo or patterned linoleum flooring in your kitchen or bathroom.

4. Mid-Century Modern Furniture

The mid-century modern furniture that gained popularity in the 1960s continued to thrive in the 1970s. Look for pieces with clean lines, teak wood finishes, and sleek, minimalist designs. These timeless pieces seamlessly fit into both retro and contemporary settings.

5. Iconic Lighting Fixtures

The '70s were known for their unique lighting fixtures. Consider incorporating a statement piece like a Sputnik chandelier, a lava lamp, or a sculptural pendant light. These fixtures can serve as conversation starters and focal points in your home.

6. Bohemian Vibes

The '70s were a time of counterculture and the rise of the hippie movement. To capture some of that bohemian spirit, add macramé wall hangings, beaded curtains, and plenty of houseplants to your interior. The combination of natural elements and artisanal crafts will give your space a laid-back, '70s-inspired vibe.

7. Don't Forget the Pop Culture References

The 1970s were a decade of pop culture icons. Incorporate elements like vintage vinyl records, retro posters, and iconic movie memorabilia into your décor. These touches not only pay homage to the era but also add a personal and nostalgic touch to your space.

8. Embrace Sustainability

In the spirit of the '70s, consider embracing sustainable and eco-friendly design choices. Seek out vintage and secondhand furniture pieces to give them a new life in your home. Opt for eco-conscious materials and practices whenever possible to align with the values of the era.

The 1970s revival in home décor is all about celebrating a time of boldness, self-expression, and individuality. By incorporating elements from this era into your home, you can create a space that not only pays tribute to the past but also feels fresh, inviting, and uniquely yours. So, go ahead and embrace the groovy vibes of the '70s as you transform your home into a nostalgic yet contemporary haven.
